The connotation of the needle these days is that it exists only to deliver things that you really shouldn't want in to stick into your body but sometimes must. The connotation says that it's something bad; however, it's not at all unreasonable to look at the many, many more people who deal with these instruments every day in an effort to keep their own life and health in check.

Look at this as an objective review of the needle and how it hits home for so many people, regardless of how.

i really enjoy this image.
i like how you have lined up the syringes with the wedges of the dart board, this was an aesthetically pleasing move that emphasizes the formal qualities, the shapes and sections of the photograph.

conceptually, i also identify with this piece as someone who relies on syringes for some aspects of my health but recognizes the more sinister relationship they can permit--as well as the dependency implied in both.

medicine as a game, medicine as a must...winning can be losing...all these things pop from the image for me, so i think it is well done. i'm glad you chose this depth of field because without it the image would seem muddled, but the sharpness of the focus on the syringes and the blurred but recognizable dartboard make the image LEGIBLE as a conceptual piece.

Well, wow. I must say that it's incredibly flattering to have a GD provide such a lovely comment on my work, let alone a +fav. I'm honored that you see as much in the piece as I had intended in making it. I've been really hoping to follow it up with a portrait shot of one in use (for the proper reasons, of course) but I fear that my model is a bit shy about exposing herself in that way. :)

I like this one better than the other version. The tighter crop really makes it jump more, and gets the point across better. I do like the greater amount of syringes in the other shot though. It is a good concept and I think you came through pretty good.

Ha ha, it's funny, I think kind of the opposite. I like the angle of the other one but the smaller number of syringes in this one - I kinda feel I went overboard with the "overdose" one. Thanks a lot for the appreciation of the concept, I was really worried that I was doing something hackneyed.

Can't say I really like the angle at which the shot was taken or the entry of the syringes onto the dart board. I think a sharper angle in inclination would better serve the piece, but then again, you may have done it so that the numbers could be clearly read. Liked the little detail of having them used (they're depressed into the board). The contrast of the dark/light dart board coupled with the light syringes sticking from the middle make it really pop out in addition to the radiating 'stripes' of the dart board. I'd have to say that the black and white treament is probably a lot more effective than if shot had been in color.

I agree with the angle, but I didn't like the shots I took from a higher angle nearly as much. I think adding the depth to the shot at the small sacrifice of some detail in the syringes was worth it.

This was originally shot in color, btw. I just know how to make a "believable" black and white using software now, rather than a generic PS grayscale.
